Constructed-in sound high quality is a combined bag. Whereas the C7L has surprisingly good width, together with some good element, clear speech and good front-end energy, it truly is missing within the bass division, and at larger volumes the sound can turn into a tad harsh. Whereas the C7L’s audio system are effective for informal viewing, followers of films, and reveals with a extra cinematic really feel, will need to spend money on top-of-the-line soundbars.

TCL C7L overview: Options
- SQD mini-LED panel
- Dolby Imaginative and prescient and HDR10+ help
- 4 HDMI 2.1 ports
The TCL C7L has TCL’s SQD mini-LED panel, which the model claims offers higher backlight accuracy because of extra exact dimming, in addition to higher color quantity. This panel has been adopted from the flagship X11L, the primary SQD mini-LED, which additionally launched in 2026.
It makes use of TCL’s TSR AiPQ processor, which comes with AI options designed to enhance image, sound and gaming efficiency. In contrast to TVs from main rivals similar to LG, Samsung and Sony, the C7L helps all HDR flavours, together with each Dolby Imaginative and prescient and HDR10+.
The C7L additionally has an anti-glare display screen for diminished mirror-like reflections, taking a cue from Samsung’s personal Glare Free display screen, which Samsung first launched on its flagship S95D OLED in 2024, earlier than bringing it to extra TVs in its mini-LED and OLED vary in 2025.
It’s additionally properly geared up for gaming, supporting 4K 144Hz, FreeSync Premium Professional, ALLM and Dolby Imaginative and prescient gaming, together with an choice for 288Hz with a suitable linked supply (PC). The C7L is, nevertheless, restricted to 2 HDMI 2.1 ports rated for gaming.

TCL C7L overview: Image high quality
- Daring colors
- Nice distinction
- Blooming from off-centre viewing
The C7L produces wonderful brightness for a mid-range, reasonably priced mini-LED. It measured 2,083 nits peak HDR brightness (with Increase off, on a ten% window) in Filmmaker Mode, which simply beats LG’s mid-range OLED C6 (which hit 1,427 nits in my most up-to-date assessments), and even bests some RGB TVs just like the Bravia 7 II (1,595 nits) and the flagship Samsung R95H (1,545 nits). With the C7L’s Increase mode activated, its brightness did hit 3,514 nits peak HDR in Film mode, however it solely affected 10% window measurements.
It additionally delivers superb fullscreen brightness, hitting 692 and 699 nits fullscreen HDR brightness in Filmmaker and Normal mode. Whereas different mini-LEDs have scored larger, that is a lot larger than any OLED. I did discover when watching in a brilliant room that there have been some mirror-like reflections with darker scenes, however the C7L did a fantastic job of mitigating reflections in brilliant scenes and sports activities content material.
The C7L does a great job of upscaling textures in SDR/HD content material, and, whereas they don’t get to 4K ranges of sharpness, textures do look cleaner. I noticed this when watching sports activities on Prime Video, which was in HD.
Switching to reference 4K scenes, the C7L demonstrated daring, vibrant colors. This made films like The Tremendous Mario Galaxy Film actually pop on display screen, proven by the wealthy hue of the Lumas every time they had been on display screen. In Velocity Racer, the C7L renders the candy-coloured aesthetic of the Racer home and the character’s outfits properly, and it did a fantastic job with Elemental on Disney Plus, particularly throughout the scene the place Ember makes a vase, making the oranges, purples and pinks of the vase dazzle on display screen.
Measuring the C7L’s HDR color gamut, it hit 97.3% of the UHDA-P3 color area (which is used for mastering 4K Blu-ray and digital cinema releases). That’s a great outcome, however most spectacular was its BT.2020 outcome, which hit 90.1%, which is among the highest scores I’ve seen.
Switching to darker and high-contrast scenes, the C7L demonstrates robust distinction with a great stability between mild and darkish tones. That is proven within the scene in The Batman through which Bruce works within the Batcave, with the distinction between the brilliant displays and the darkish environment dealt with properly. Whereas the distinction didn’t fairly match as much as that of the LG B6E OLED once I in contrast the 2, it was good for a backlit TV.
Area scenes in Mission Hail Mary appeared equally spectacular, with wealthy and inky blacks. The C7L additionally confirmed good backlight management, with solely minor blooming occurring within the stars towards the black backdrop of area when seen head-on. Off-center viewing, nevertheless, revealed extra backlight blooming, which is a typical prevalence with backlit TVs. Image high quality did fade with some brighter scenes as properly when seen off-center, although to not the extent I’ve seen with previous mini-LED TVs.
Lastly, the C7L demonstrated superb movement dealing with. For sports activities, having movement set to ‘Medium’ or a customized setting of Blur discount on 2 and Judder discount on 5 labored properly, delivering easy movement with only a few movement artifacts. For films, Pure Cinema mode labored very properly, because the C7L dealt with the fast-paced motion of Velocity Racer convincingly.

TCL C7L overview: Sound high quality
- Good, front-facing sound
- Good accuracy with some width
- Bass is missing
The TCL C7L 55-inch I examined contains a 2.2-channel, 60W speaker system tuned by Bang & Olufsen. In addition to standard sound modes like Film and Sports activities, the C7L additionally contains a customized sound setting, in addition to a Beosound menu that gives the selection of 4 totally different sound profiles: Relaxed, Vibrant, Energetic, and Heat; it’s also possible to regulate the stability between these for a customized impact.
Watching the Batmobile/Penguin automobile chase scenes in The Batman, the C7L’s audio system ship refined element with good accuracy, with the sound precisely monitoring the on-screen motion . The soundstage additionally delivers good width, with sound extending past the body and demonstrating good dynamics. I additionally discovered the C7L’s sound to be very forward-facing, that means the general sound was clearer than from another TVs.
The C7L’s built-in sound isn’t with out its flaws, although. Bass is missing, so I wasn’t getting the low-end rumble from the Batmobile that I anticipated. Treble might typically be somewhat brash too, particularly when the amount was pushed. I experimented with the Beosound menu, and located that positioning the cursor between Energetic and Heat added a little bit of depth, however nothing substantial.
TCL C7L overview: Design
- Light-weight really feel
- Normal, secure design
- Central pedestal stand
The C7L’s design is fairly customary for a TV on this value vary. It’s nearly similar to final 12 months’s TCL C7K, that includes a silver body that provides some good polish to the moderately plain construct elsewhere. The TV itself is extremely mild for a 55-inch TV, although feels sturdy sufficient when positioned on a TV unit.
It makes use of a central pedestal stand that’s simple to suit and seems like the identical sort of plastic materials used within the rear panel. The TV itself is somewhat deeper than different TVs, particularly in comparison with OLEDs.
The included distant feels somewhat light-weight and low-cost, however has a typical button structure that’s simple to comply with, with shortcuts to main apps like Netflix. Total, the C7L has a fairly secure design.
TCL C7L overview: Good TV & menus
- Google TV
- Good image settings with simple menus
- Massive distracting banner adverts on Google homepage
Like all TCL TVs, the C7L makes use of Google TV as its sensible TV platform. Google TV is nice at making content material suggestions and even remembering content material you’ve watched, particularly with YouTube. Sadly, the homepage options giant banner adverts that take as much as half the area on the display screen. This is a matter with Google TV that I’ve additionally seen on loads of different manufacturers that use the platform.
The assorted menus and settings are simple sufficient to navigate, with image settings divided into logical classes. There are additionally loads of settings to let you customise your image to the nth diploma, although some settings, particularly a number of the texture enhancement settings, make much less distinction than others. I’d personally suggest turning settings like Tremendous Decision off for a extra pure image.
Whereas Google TV is a superbly serviceable sensible TV platform, I really feel it’s not as robust as LG’s webOS, Samsung’s Tizen, or Roku.
TCL C7L overview: Gaming
- 4K 144Hz & FreeSync Premium Professional
- 9.8ms enter lag time
- Solely two HDMI 2.1 ports
The TCL C7L has a fantastic checklist of gaming options, together with 4K 144Hz, FreeSync Premium Professional VRR, Dolby Imaginative and prescient gaming and ALLM, though solely two of its 4 HDMI ports are rated 2.1 and help these options. The C7L additionally contains a Sport Grasp bar, the place you’ll be able to regulate settings similar to shadow enhancement.
In my testing the C7L recorded low input-lag occasions, together with 9.8ms at 4K 60Hz and 4.9ms at 1080p 120Hz, that are improbable outcomes. These numbers translate into real-world efficiency too, as I discovered when enjoying Battlefield V. The C7L’s efficiency was nice general, dealing with the sport’s large-scale battles and explosive motion with ease. As I battled by ranges, it might simply sustain with my must snap to targets whereas transferring round.
Whereas the C7L’s image high quality was nice for gaming general, delivering the identical daring colors and powerful distinction I’d seen whereas watching films, I did discover now and again that textures might muddy and blur throughout notably hectic moments.
TCL C7L overview: Worth
- Glorious options for the cash
- Aggressive value for this stage of tech
- Nice mid-range choice
The 55-inch mannequin of the TCL C7L that I examined prices £999 on common, though I’ve seen it drop to as little as £849. Plus, if TCL’s pricing technique of earlier years is something to go by, these costs will drop once more, particularly throughout gross sales intervals like Black Friday. Even at full value, it’s £200 cheaper than the entry-level LG B6 OLED (£1,199 for the 55-inch) and that value places it in an analogous vary to rival mini-LEDs from Hisense (the U7 Professional is £999) and Samsung (the QN80H is £899).
For the efficiency and options it provides, the C7L is superb worth. The efficiency of TCL’s mid-range mini-LED fashions appears to enhance 12 months on 12 months, and the C7L is among the finest TCL TVs I’ve examined. Sure, its sound may very well be higher, however it ticks loads of bins in different areas, and has the potential to turn into even higher worth as its value drops over time.

How I examined the TCL C7L
- Examined over a few weeks
- Examined in various lighting situations in our testing lab utilizing reference scenes
- Measurements taken utilizing Portrait Shows’ Calman color calibration software program
Step one of testing the TCL C7L was some informal viewing to ascertain its finest image and sound modes. I ultimately settled on Filmmaker Mode for films and TV reveals and Normal for sports activities and broadcast TV.
After testing the C7L with SDR content material together with sports activities and HD films to check its upscaling, I moved onto reference 4K HDR and Dolby Imaginative and prescient scenes to check it color, distinction, backlight management, brightness, movement and element.
In addition to subjective testing, I took measurements utilizing specialised gear, specializing in the C7L’s brightness, HDR color gamut protection, image accuracy and enter lag. These assessments had been completed utilizing a Klein Okay-10A colourimeter, profiled with a Jeti Spectral 15VA Spectroradiometer and Portrait Shows’ Calman Color calibration software program.
For brightness, I measured the C7L with 1-100% window sizes, specializing in peak (10%) and fullscreen (100%) brightness particularly. These had been measured in each SDR and HDR.
Subsequent was HDR color gamut protection, with measurements of the UHDA-P3 color area (used for 4K Blu-ray and digital cinema mastering) and BT.2020 (the color area utilized by projectors).
I additionally measured greyscale and color accuracy in SDR.
I additionally examined the C7L HDR EOTF, which measures its accuracy at each mild and darkish ranges, and Spectral Energy Distribution, which measures the C7L’s color efficiency.
Lastly, I measured enter lag in milliseconds (ms), utilizing a Leo Bodnar 4K HDMI Enter Lag Tester.
