Uber to pay $178 million to settle lawsuit with Australia taxi drivers, legislation agency says By Reuters

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Uber (NYSE:) has agreed to pay A$271.8 million ($178.3 million) to settle a lawsuit in Australia introduced by taxi operators and drivers, who alleged they misplaced revenue when the ride-hailing firm moved into the nation, a legislation agency stated on Monday.

Maurice Blackburn Attorneys filed the category motion in 2019 within the Supreme Courtroom of Victoria state on behalf greater than 8,000 taxi and rent automobile homeowners and drivers, which the legislation agency stated “Uber fought tooth and nail at each level alongside the best way.”

“Since 2018, Uber has made important contributions into numerous state-level taxi compensation schemes, and with at this time’s proposed settlement, we put these legacy points firmly in our previous,” an Uber spokesperson stated in an emailed response.

Uber didn’t disclose the proposed settlement in its response.

“What our group members requested for was not one other set of excuses – however an end result,” Maurice Blackburn stated.
