Samsung says its foldables will overtake the Galaxy S series by 2025

TL;DR

  • Samsung says its foldable phones will be its most popular phones in the next three years.
  • The company’s mobile chief believes foldables will become the new standard of smartphones.

If you didn’t know this already, Samsung is all in on foldable phones. After retiring its Galaxy Note line in favor of flexible devices, the company now wants the latter to even overtake its Galaxy S series. Or so it seems from recent statements made by Samsung mobile head Roh Tae-moon.

According to the executive, combined Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip shipments will outsize that of other premium Galaxy phones in three years.

“By 2025, foldable items will take up more than 50% of Samsung’s total premium smartphone shipments,” Roh told reporters, according to Korea Herald.

He also said that “foldables will become the new standard of smartphones.”

That means going forward, Samsung could make its foldable flagships even more affordable to increase their adoption. While the Galaxy Z Fold is still an ultra-premium phone in its fourth generation, the Z Flip line presents a more realistic entryway into Samsung’s foldable phone ecosystem.

The company also offers great trade-in deals and cheap repairs on these smartphones, and we could see these become even more lucrative in the future.

While it’s hard to believe that in just three years, Samsung thinks foldable phones will be the new standard, it says something about the direction the company is headed in. We might even see Samsung give less love to the S-series going forward compared to its foldable line. It seems the phone maker is already scaling back its Galaxy S devices, with rumors pointing to an end of the Fan Edition phones.

Will there be a future where Samsung goes fully foldable, ending the candy bar form factor forever? It’s a stretch to assume this, but it’s not that difficult to imagine.

Can foldable phones completely replace traditional smartphones in the near future?
