These stresses must be endured by the ball bearings for the length of the vehicle’s design life, which is typically 10 to 15 years or 185,000 miles.

However, EV manufacturers are hopeful that in the future, this design’s life can be increased to about 300,000 kilometers. Therefore, special ball bearings with unique cage designs, lubrication properties, and internal geometries need to be created to address these issues.

With the rapidly evolving EVs, the electric vehicle bearings are subjected to base on various performance parameters, including a wider operating temperature range and increased speed range. Bearings used in electric vehicle motors need to be durable in high-temperature conditions and produce low noise in low-temperature conditions. A particular combination of gearing, gearbox, and torque solutions can be offered based on OEMs’ needs for electric vehicles. Major bearing manufacturers like NSK Ltd., AB SKF, and NTN Corporation are developing new solutions to satisfy the present and future bearing needs of manufacturers of electric vehicle powertrains.

The demand for technologically superior low-friction lubricating grease is expanding along with the focus on high rotational speed motors. These lubricating greases can assist in reducing the amount of heat produced at high rotational speeds. Thus, one of the solutions that will be essential to the advancement of bearings in the upcoming years is lubricating grease.

Need for Advanced Electric Vehicle Bearings with Increasing Demand for High-Speed EVs

Electric vehicle manufacturers have been working on size optimization of vehicle components, including electric motors, to make room for larger battery packs, which will ultimately deliver increased vehicle range in response to the growing demand for improved vehicle efficiencies and longer driving ranges. A higher rotation speed is needed to produce the same amount of power due to the electric motors and their components’ reduced size.

It necessitates both a reduction in the size of the bearings and other electric motor components as well as a higher rotational speed for these components. This is the reason why high-speed electric car bearings for electric vehicle motors are becoming more and more necessary.

The new electric vehicle models that will be introduced in the upcoming years are probably expected to have substantially higher rotating speeds. Focusing on smaller electric motors will enable the production of electric vehicle models with greater efficiency and range.
