How can companies create/maintain Strong barriers to avoid companies like apple crushing them? : startups

So I recently came across this article https://link.medium.com/EDfeO8y1Qqb

It’s not new for a company to have some sort of strong barrier, but the only one I can think of is a patent

There is a problem with patents in that they can be manipulated by competitors, thereby eliminating the patent barrier

Sonos home audio, for instance, has 2100 patents, beating all the competition. but still companies like apple, amazon and google has the same systems.

What do you think?
