First oil achieved from Mero-4 area in Santos basin, offshore Brazil



Oil manufacturing has began from the fourth improvement section of the Mero area off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, within the pre-salt space of the Santos basin. The sphere is operated by Petrobras (38.6%), with TotalEnergies and Shell Brasil every holding 19.3% working curiosity. 

Launched in August 2021, this new section referred to as “Mero-4” will join 12 wells to the brand new Alexandre de Gusmão FPSO (Floating Manufacturing, Storage and Offloading) unit, with a manufacturing capability of 180,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd). This undertaking has been designed to reduce greenhouse fuel emissions, with reinjection of the related fuel into the reservoir and 0 routine flaring.

This startup brings Mero’s whole manufacturing capability to 770,000 bpd by way of 5 FPSOs.

“The beginning-up of Mero-4 marks the top of the event of this world-class area — with the commissioning of 4 FPSOs in three years — and the beginning of a long-term manufacturing section producing strong free money circulate,” commented Nicolas Terraz, President E&P of TotalEnergies. “This can be a nice achievement for the Libra consortium and a significant milestone for TotalEnergies in Brazil, a key progress nation for our firm.”
